JOB HUNTING TIPS
Expert Advice on Identifying Job Openings

By Mary White

If you're depending on "help wanted" advertisements to identify potential jobs, you're finding out about open positions at the same time as everyone else. I asked Matt Tovrog, a partner with Bell Oaks Executive Search to share his insights and advice regarding better ways to search for job openings.

Creative Job Search Tips from Matt Tovrog

LoveToKnow: What creative suggestions do you have regarding finding out about job openings before they are advertised to the general population?
Matt Tovrog: I have read reports that between 75 and 80 percent of created jobs are unadvertised, which is difficult to fathom considering the number of openings posted online.
If you are actively job seeking, networking and proactively pursuing hiring managers is not just critical, it is absolutely necessary in finding one of these jobs. Many of these unadvertised jobs are the result of a hiring manager meeting someone that they must have on their team and will find them a place in the organization.
If you are gainfully employed, your immediate network of friends, family and former colleagues may not know that you are open to new opportunities. Telling these trusted contacts that you are exploring your options allows them to think about individuals in their network who would be worthwhile for you to meet. How often has a friend started a new job and you thought to yourself, "I didn't even know they were unhappy or looking to make a change?"
Let your network know you are interested and look over their connections on LinkedIn and Facebook to find individuals who would be valuable to meet. Your friends and family should be happy to open up their networks, but be willing to do the same for them!

Put Your Network to Work

If you're ready to take your job search to the next level, consider incorporating Tovrog's suggestions into your efforts for your job search. You just might find that reaching out to your professional network is the key to finding your next position.
