Expert Tips for Successful Job Interview Preparation

By Mary White

You know that preparation is a key to job interview success. What you might not know is exactly what you should do to get ready. As LoveToKnow's Job Hunting Tips blogger, I asked Matt Tovrog, a partner with Bell Oaks Executive Search to shed some light on just what job seekers should do to successfully prepare for an interview.

Expert Advice: What to Do Before Your Next Job Interview

According to Matt Tovrog, it's essential for candidates to take the necessary time to understand the following prior to a job interview:

Information about the company: Be well-versed on the company basics and don't ask about them in the interview because it is information easily come by: public or private, revenue, number of employees, where is the headquarters, how old is the company, who are the competitors, etc.

The position: Read the job description multiple times and highlight certain aspects that stand out as well as components that are questionable.

Questions to ask: The number one characteristic of an unprepared or disinterested candidate is their lack of questions for a hiring manager. Ask great questions about the job, the goals of the role/group/company, how success is defined, and the challenges facing the company. Also, ask questions about the leadership style of the hiring manager, the makeup of the peer group, why the position is open, etc.

What the hiring manager is looking for: Search LinkedIn for current or former employees who might be able to provide insight on the interview style of the hiring manager or the culture of the organization. What you hear might dissuade you from moving forward or excite you further to pursue the job. Either way, it will be useful information.

Proper Preparation Can Pay Off

If you're ready to take your job search to the next level, consider incorporating Tovrog's suggestions into your efforts for your job search. You just might find that reaching out to your professional network is the key to finding your next position.

Will you benefit from taking the time to properly prepare for your next interview? Yes! Tovrog explains, "Candidates who spend the necessary time researching and preparing for an interview will come across as interested in the job, but they will also display to the hiring authority how they are organized and professional in their approach to an interview as well as projects, should they be hired."
